Expert Care in Leamington Spa & Warwickshire

A Mummy MOT is a specialist post natal examination, suitable for any new (or not so new!) mother, designed to screen for common postnatal conditions. Lauren will help you get back to exercise safely, reducing your risk of pelvic organ prolapse and other musculoskeletal issues. It is recommended you have your Mummy MOT around 6-8 weeks postpartum, but we often see women who are years down the line and still benefit significantly – it’s never too late!

Assessment includes:

– Postural and pelvic alignment assessment
– Functional movement screening
– Diastasis recti and abdominal examination
– Internal pelvic floor assessment

You will receive a comprehensive written report, an individually tailored rehab program that is specific to your needs, and ongoing support and guidance whenever you need it. Want to know more?

Meet Lauren

Lauren is an advanced practice physiotherapist with a specialist interest in Women’s Health, and is a qualified Mummy MOT practitioner. This is a specialist post-natal assessment designed to screen for common post-partum conditions such as vaginal prolapse, diastasis rectus abdominus (DRA) and sexual dysfunction. Among other things, these issues can cause instability or poor core strength leading to women developing pelvic or back pain, bladder, bowel and sexual dysfunction. Lauren firmly believes there is not enough help and support out there for new mums with regard to a safe return to exercise, and she is intent on changing this.

As a physiotherapist, learning never stops. Lauren gained a diploma qualification in Injection Therapy with the Society of Musculoskeletal Medicine. She can provide steroid injections and can offer hyaluronic acid injections for our clients if clinically necessary.

Lauren is focused on providing our local population with the best possible advice about managing their MSK condition. She will do her best to understand how the problem impacts your life, working with you to make the decisions about your care. She has always been dedicated to helping patients fully understand their condition, empowering them and ultimately improving the quality of life for everyone she sees.

The assessment will last about 90 minutes. It is crucial that we have enough time to cover the areas we need to, to establish your history, main concerns, complete a comprehensive physical assessment and ensure that your treatment plan will be effective. This is what makes me different – having a high quality initial assessment sets us up with the right treatment plan for you from the very beginning.

A number of mums will only require a one-off assessment, as a lot will be covered in your assessment. You will have an individualised, specific rehab program to follow to help you towards achieving your goals, and a lot of new knowledge about how to manage anything that crops up along the way.

If you have significant symptoms, and depending on any diagnosis made, it may be useful for us to work together for a number of sessions, to help you get the best results and recover well. I will discuss with you all of your treatment options and ultimately that will be your decision.

The Mummy MOT is a specialist postnatal assessment, and will screen for common problems that women experience postnatally. You can read more on the blog. The physical elements include movement and strength testing, diastasis recti assessment, abdominal examination and a vaginal examination. If you have any specific questions or concerns, I am more than happy to discuss these with you prior to the assessment.

The assessment can be performed from 6-weeks postpartum. It is recommended you have attended your 6-week check with your GP, but this is not an absolute requirement.

There is no upwards time limit; I commonly assess women who have had multiple pregnancies and school age children, it is never too late! If you aren’t sure whether you would benefit from a Mummy MOT, please reach out and I’ll be happy to talk this through with you.

The assessment costs £120 and is payable by cash, card or BACS transfer. Follow up appointments last 45-60 minutes and cost £80.

The assessment will take place in your home. We only require a room with privacy and a little space – I will bring a treatment couch as we will need it for some aspects of the assessment. The home visits are not just convenient for you, it actually helps me to understand you better and gives me very good insight into practical considerations and barriers, e.g. what would fit most easily into your rehab program. If you have any fitness equipment at home you wish to incorporate, it is really useful to have this nearby during the assessment.

I cover most of South Warwickshire including Leamington Spa, Kenilworth, Warwick, Coventry, Stratford-upon-Avon, Rugby, Knowle, Solihull, Dorridge and Southam. If you are unsure whether I can travel to you, please contact us to discuss. There may be potential for me to include your address subject to additional mileage.

Ideally you would have the duration of the assessment without distraction, to ensure we are focusing fully on your needs, as it can be difficult when there are two people competing for your attention! However, if this is not an option or you would prefer to have your baby with you – please let me know upon booking, as I am happy to accommodate for this, and will just need to plan to adapt the assessment slightly.

I offer appointments Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. I will do my best to accommodate whatever time works for you, and can offer evening appointments on certain days if you have no workable alternative.

It is useful if you can wear a supportive bra and shorts, so I can see everything I need to see. For the vaginal examination you will be asked to remove the bottom half of your clothing. You may want to have a small hand towel available to lie on during the vaginal examination.

If you are on your period on the day of the assessment, it doesn’t mean that the vaginal examination isn’t possible. If you normally wear tampons you would have to remove this just before the vaginal exam, otherwise the examination can go ahead as normal. I would just encourage using a small towel to lie on during the exam. Remember as well that you are in the comfort of your own home so this shouldn’t be a huge hurdle – but if it makes you very uncomfortable I am more than happy to reschedule your appointment.

I would be more than happy to answer any additional questions you have. Please head to our contact page and I will be in touch.
