What Is a Mummy MOT?

The Mummy MOT® is a specialist postnatal assessment designed for any mum — whether you’re 6 weeks or 6 years postpartum. It’s never too late to invest in your pelvic health, and the benefits can be life-changing.

Led by our clinical specialist physiotherapist Lauren, this in-depth assessment helps give you some structure and guidance to return to exercise safely and confidently, while reducing your risk of pelvic organ prolapse, abdominal separation, and other common postnatal musculoskeletal issues such as back pain, sciatica and hip/knee pain – proactive prevention is key!

What’s Included:

🔍 Comprehensive history — including your pregnancy, birth, lifestyle, and any ongoing symptoms
🧍‍♀️ Full-body postural & joint alignment check
🏃‍♀️ Functional movement screening — to identify strength imbalances and compensations
🤰 Abdominal exam — including diastasis recti assessment and C-section scar care
🩺 Internal pelvic floor exam — to assess strength, tone, coordination, and function

We focus on the core muscle groups most impacted by pregnancy and birth — checking that they’re not just “working,” but connected and functioning in a way that truly supports the daily demands of motherhood AND your fitness goals.

What You’ll Receive:

✅ A detailed written report outlining your findings
✅ A personalised rehab plan tailored to your needs and lifestyle
12 months’ access to a rehab app to track your progress
✅ Ongoing support and expert guidance whenever you need it

Whether you’re planning a return to the gym, struggling with symptoms, or simply want reassurance that everything is healing as it should — the Mummy MOT is here to help you reconnect with your body and move forward with confidence.

Meet Lauren

I’m a clinical specialist with over 12 years of experience in musculoskeletal and women’s health services, extensive postgraduate training, and a Master’s degree in Manual Therapy. I’m also a mother to two young children, so I understand the need to be flexible with your rehab needs because the daily juggle is relentless.

Even if you’re not dealing with symptoms right now, getting expert guidance on returning to exercise safely — with a focus on joint health, core strength, and injury prevention — is incredibly valuable. This kind of preventative rehab shouldn’t be seen as a luxury. It should be the norm. That’s exactly what I love about the Mummy MOT. In most areas of healthcare, prevention is an afterthought — but here, it’s front and centre. It’s a rare and powerful opportunity to support women proactively, right at a time of huge physical and emotional transition. We deserve better support, and that’s exactly why I will never shut up about the importance of what I do!

I am regulated by and registered with the Health Care Professionals Council (PH99425), the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (09074) and the Musculoskeletal Association of Chartered Physiotherapists (14329), so you can be certain I am held accountable to high professional and ethical standards of conduct.

The assessment will last about 90 minutes. It is crucial that we have enough time to cover the areas we need to, to establish your history, main concerns, complete a comprehensive physical assessment and ensure that your treatment plan will be effective. This is what makes me different – having a high quality initial assessment sets us up with the right treatment plan for you from the very beginning.

A number of mums will only require a one-off assessment, as a lot will be covered in your assessment. You will have an individualised, specific rehab program to follow to help you towards achieving your goals, and a lot of new knowledge about how to manage anything that crops up along the way.

If you have significant symptoms, and depending on any diagnosis made, it may be useful for us to work together for a number of sessions, to help you get the best results and recover well. I will discuss with you all of your treatment options and ultimately that will be your decision.

The Mummy MOT is a specialist postnatal assessment, and will screen for common problems that women experience postnatally. You can read more on the blog. The physical elements include movement and strength testing, diastasis recti assessment, abdominal examination and a vaginal examination. If you have any specific questions or concerns, I am more than happy to discuss these with you prior to the assessment.

The assessment can be performed from 6-weeks postpartum. It is recommended you have attended your 6-week check with your GP, but this is not an absolute requirement.

There is no upwards time limit; I commonly assess women who have had multiple pregnancies and school age children, it is never too late! If you aren’t sure whether you would benefit from a Mummy MOT, please reach out and I’ll be happy to talk this through with you.

The assessment costs £120 and is payable by cash, card or BACS transfer. Follow up appointments last 45-60 minutes and cost £80.

The assessment will take place in your home. We only require a room with privacy and a little space – I will bring a treatment couch as we will need it for some aspects of the assessment. The home visits are not just convenient for you, it actually helps me to understand you better and gives me very good insight into practical considerations and barriers, e.g. what would fit most easily into your rehab program. If you have any fitness equipment at home you wish to incorporate, it is really useful to have this nearby during the assessment.

I cover most of South Warwickshire including Leamington Spa, Kenilworth, Warwick, Coventry, Stratford-upon-Avon, Rugby, Knowle, Solihull, Dorridge and Southam. If you are unsure whether I can travel to you, please contact us to discuss. There may be potential for me to include your address subject to additional mileage.

Ideally you would have the duration of the assessment without distraction, to ensure we are focusing fully on your needs, as it can be difficult when there are two people competing for your attention! However, if this is not an option or you would prefer to have your baby with you – please let me know upon booking, as I am happy to accommodate for this, and will just need to plan to adapt the assessment slightly.

I offer appointments Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. I will do my best to accommodate whatever time works for you, and can offer evening appointments on certain days if you have no workable alternative.

It is useful if you can wear a supportive bra and shorts, so I can see everything I need to see. For the vaginal examination you will be asked to remove the bottom half of your clothing. You may want to have a small hand towel available to lie on during the vaginal examination.

If you are on your period on the day of the assessment, it doesn’t mean that the vaginal examination isn’t possible. If you normally wear tampons you would have to remove this just before the vaginal exam, otherwise the examination can go ahead as normal. I would just encourage using a small towel to lie on during the exam. Remember as well that you are in the comfort of your own home so this shouldn’t be a huge hurdle – but if it makes you very uncomfortable I am more than happy to reschedule your appointment.

I would be more than happy to answer any additional questions you have. Please head to our contact page and I will be in touch.
